What are STDs?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are a global public health concern. STDs are infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites that can be transmitted through sexual contact. They encompass a wide range of infections, including but not limited to:

  1. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus): HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system and can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) if left untreated.
  2. Chlamydia: Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that can affect the genitals, throat, and rectum. Symptoms may include abnormal vaginal discharge and painful urination.
  3. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): HSV can cause oral or genital herpes, characterised by painful sores or blisters on or around the affected area.
  4. Gonorrhea: A bacterial infection that can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease if left untreated. Common symptoms include painful urination and genital discharge.
  5. Hepatitis: Viral infections like Hepatitis B and C can be sexually transmitted and affect the liver. Symptoms may include fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal pain.
  6. Syphilis: A bacterial infection, syphilis is spread through direct contact with a syphilitic sore or rash. Symptoms may include sores on the genitals, mouth, and/or anus.

Why should I take the test?

STDs can affect individuals without showing any symptoms. In fact, with different types of STDs such as HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, and Genital Herpes (caused by Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2), it’s natural to feel unsure about whether you have been exposed to any form of an STDs.

If you experience any signs or symptoms of STDs, or if you have had recent exposure to a partner(s) with STDs, it is highly recommended that you consider undergoing STD testing and screening.

STD test/screening/check in Singapore is recommended to one who has:

Many cases of such infections remain undetected because there are no physical signs. That’s why it’s important to get tested regularly even if you do not show any symptoms. Regular testing can help with:

1. Early Detection: Testing can detect infections even before symptoms appear, allowing for early treatment and prevention of complications.

2. Preventing Transmission: Knowing your STD/STI status is crucial to preventing the spread of infections to sexual partners.

3. Protecting Your Health: Undiagnosed and untreated STDs/STIs can lead to severe health problems, including infertility, cancer, and even death in the case of HIV/AIDS.

Please be aware of the above symptoms. If you experience any of these, it is strongly recommended to consult a doctor and consider getting tested for STDs.

How Long Does Testing Take?

Some test results can take about a week, depending on the type and methods used. During the waiting time, it’s important to still avoid potentially exposing other people to the disease, should you be tested positive. So it’s suggested that you refrain from sexual activity until you have the results.

How Accurate Are STD Screening/Tests?

Testing is the most accurate way to know whether or not you might have contracted an STD. While it is important to get tested after any sexual encounter, it’s also important to understand that test results aren’t always 100% accurate.

Sometimes tests are conducted too soon after possible exposure, and the disease hasn’t had enough time to show up on the results. Because of this, it’s important to get tested twice—once soon after possible exposure and then again six weeks later. This will allow for a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan if necessary. Testing is essential in order to keep you and your sexual partners safe, so make sure that you go through with it.

Reviewing your test results with a medical professional is also important, so that you can have an in-depth conversation about the best course of treatment and prevention methods. Taking proactive steps when it comes to sexual health protection is key—so don’t forget to stay informed and get tested!
